This warehouse renovation houses the executive and administrative offices of State Steel Supply Company. We were able to put the facility on the National Register of Historic Places and utilize historic preservation practices allowing the owner to garner historic tax credits which partially funded the project. From a design and aesthetic perspective the facility’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and historic structural framework are left exposed which combined with glass walls and atriums throughout create an open and revealing space.

PLaN Architecture (lead designer), associated with BNIM Architects as Design Collaborator to develop the design concept for the 11,000 square feet Gilchrist Learning Center free-standing addition to the Sioux City Art Center designed by SOM. The Gilchrist Learning Center provides art studios and public interaction space to expand the teaching mission of the Art Center.
The facility is composed of four white rectangular solid volumes to compliment and contrast the more animated façade of the original SOM building and to serve as neutral ‘canvas’ for the adjacent sculpture garden. Each volume provides for a unique component of the educational program including a Ceramics studio, two Art-Making studios and a Classroom. A transparent collaboration, display and critique space connects the volumes and shares the activities of the building from the pedestrian and vehicular circulations, adjacent sculpture garden and the surrounding Art Center site.
We were approached by the Chesterman Company to develop an update to their existing 1970s era bottling plant in order to make a more visible façade and a more prominent entry for customers. We developed a steel connector which allowed us to wrap the concrete ribbed building with a sleek glass skin with a “Coca-Cola” graphic which lights up in the evening hours giving the plant a dramatic presence.

Due to our extensive experience in urban renovation projects, we were selected to design the Pearl Street Historic District Development project. The project originally consisted of 9 exterior renovations and 3 interior renovations which includes McCarthy & Bailey’s Irish Pub, a Wine Bar, Jitters Coffee & Donuts and as well as a professional office. This project set the standard for future projects in the district and utilized historic and contemporary elements to promote a chic and stylish meets Main Street feel.

The Chesterman Residence project called for a renovation of an existing residence that was once very contemporary which had become dated. The floor plan of the home was separated into several small rooms that hindered the functionality of the young couple residing in the home today. The renovation design opened up the floor plan, updated surfaces, renovated the kitchen and revealed the existing wood and steel super-structure of the home. We also replaced and renovated the exterior elements such as the deck and patio extending the couple’s outdoor living space.

The Darnell Lake Home project was designed for a small site which only allowed for 34 feet in width along the lakefront and approximately 55 feet in depth for the building envelope. Given the desire for a size of 2,900 square feet, we maximized the site usage while conserving some of the small lot for outdoor living space. The home includes a number of outdoor rooms created by the form of the house and provides opportunities to gather and enjoy the lake. On the interior, the large windows connect the occupants with the lake and surround landscape.
